Description
Summer has began was photographed on a wonderful May morning with a beautiful blue sky at the bottom of a lovely valley with a stream flowing through. I saw the fantastic opportunity for this wonderful scene to be a landscape in the winter, but as you can imagine all the trees where bare of foliage with no flowers.
But still I could see this place as a fantastic photography shot even through I had no idea where the sun would come up in summer.
In May this scene became to life better then I could of ever dreamed full of beds of white flowers.
On this May morning through was quite hard and I thought I would come away with nothing as there was a wonderful fog sitting on the slops of the valley but nothing low down..well I say 'nothing' loosely as the scene is beautiful rather I like natural spectacles for drama like beams of light going through the canopy but to get the wonderful beams of light you need 2 things 1) moisture in the air..not to thick through! think mist not fog not. The first one is not a hard find in England but the other ingredient is far harder 2) clear sky at worst patchy cloud just so long as sunlight can emerge and light the moisture. I have to (like all photographers) keep a keen eye on weather reports and even then as the English climate is so sporadic it's very hard.
The mist dissolved in the wake of the sunlight in the valley and I just thought that I would stick around a bit longer for the sun to get high enough to light this scene. The sun rises in May at 5.10 am (and it's not the longest day of the year yet!!.. I dread June shoots) so a sun lit scene would do..but then as often in Photography something happens, a change, a shift in conditions and opportunity arises..but can only last for moments. So I had to move and move fast as I like to get as many compositions and different shots as I can yet concentrating on what I am doing..this is when camera gear can get really time consuming as changing filters, polarizers and lenses can take precious minutes you don't have.
In the end I was Quite happy how this scene has came out. The landscape has a Tom Cruise 'Legend' feel about it, fairy tail and fantasy. I wanted both the wonderful little stream along with the light beams so a panoramic vie was perfect for this woodland scene. I have given this image a dream like soft feel. When I look at this photograph I can imagine someone sitting on one of the logs reading or righting a story, even a party going through the woods on a great quest. The 4.00 am out of the bed on a Sunday was most definitely worth it and the greens and turquoise colors complement one another beautifully. Here is a little on Woodland Thank you for reading and looking. John Chivers.
Woodland is a low-density forest forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade. Woodlands may support an understory of shrubs and herbaceous plants including grasses. Woodland may form a transition to shrubland under drier conditions or during early stages of primary or secondary succession. Higher densities and areas of trees, with largely closed canopy, provide extensive and nearly continuous shade and are referred to as forest.
Conservationists have worked hard to preserve woodlands. For example, the woodlands in Northwest Indiana have been preserved as part of the Indiana Dunes.
Woodland is used in British woodland management to mean any smaller area covered in trees, however dense. (Forest is usually used in the British Isles only for more extensive wooded areas, again, regardless of density and also including Royal forests, which may not be wooded at all). The term Ancient Woodland is used in British nature conservation to refer to any wooded land that has existed for a very long period (equivalent to the American term old growth forest).
